    Description

Shaw University Bears vs. Lincoln University Lions
    Antique Football Pennant Postcard 1909
Rare vintage early divided-back postcard depicting a Shaw University football pennant in the school colors of garnet and white. Postcard commemorates the 1909 game between the Shaw Bears and the Lincoln University Lions. Shaw was victorious in a shutout.
Unposted, but dated November 20, 1909, and addressed to Miss Miller at A. + M. School in Carrollton, Georgia (Fourth District A&M School, founded in 1906, is now the University of West Georgia). Handwritten message reads: "It was a good game and clean. Lincoln is sick abed now, my boys are too happy."
    Dimensions: 3 1/2" x 5 1/2"
Shaw University, in Raleigh, North Carolina, was founded in 1865, making it the first historically black college (HBCU) in the southern United States. Lincoln University, in Oxford, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1854, and is the nation's first degree-granting HBCU. Both schools are members of the CIAA, the oldest African-American athletic conference in the U.S.
This is an extremely scarce and historically important early football postcard representing two of the oldest HBCUs in the country.
