This is a vintage Revere Co. Rome, N. Y.  hard wood and metal steel book holder in the SHELL design. Photos include two from the 1937 Revere catalog. This item has been used but is still in very good condition. Many of these are rusty and have the chrome finish worn off. Overall condition is very good.
