This vessel is New Old Stock - it was in storage for almost half a century - recently discovered - never touched nor used - rare and unique
Have you heard the term "New Old Stock (NOS)?" It refers to Old Stock of any item that was never sold or used. For example, if you were lucky enough to come across a collection of baseball cards (hopefully still in the old wrappers and un-opened), that could be NOS. Similarly, if a business, shop or warehouse had items purchased years ago but had not sold all of the stock, that would be NOS. Other New Old stock items are art glass, pottery, pens, watches, toys, or other things - you may have received as a child - but never used or opened. The real trick is to be lucky enough to find New Old Stock. In the marketplace, NOS is like the "holy grail" of anything collectible, and is so highly prized that it often commands high prices.
What an amazing find! A Large Vintage Mashiko Art Pottery Bowl in Brand New Original Condition
I have received emails from many people I trust who are positive that this Mashiko piece is by Shoji Hamada. A wonderful customer of mine told me her father worked alongside Hamada and Leach in Hamada's compound in Mashiko during the 1960s when my pieces were created, and she recognizes them since she grew up with, and inherited, so many similar pieces from her Dad. She was thrilled to find my offerings on ebay and bought many vessels from me. Another customer, who spent time in Mashiko during the 196Os also tells me these items are definitely Hamada made vessels.
At least 2 pottery experts/collectors have also confirmed that these pieces are Hamada's. I purchased these items from a very fine Japanese Art Gallery and shop that had been in business since the 1940s. They had a huge building with so many wonderful things. I had been buying from them for a long time and found these items, plus others, in their original, old, dusty, sealed boxes - most never opened until I discovered them. These pottery pieces I found and bought were the gallery's most valuable pieces, which they told me many times.
Please note that Shoji Hamada did not sign his work.
There is no reserve on this truly phenomenal, superbly textural, deep and brilliantly glazed with drip designs, sensually~shaped art pottery vessel made in Mashiko, Japan. Mashiko is in the southeastern part of Tochigi prefecture, known worldwide for its outstanding, top quality, highly respected pottery. It is believed that this style of innovative, beautiful pottery was started by Otsuka Keizaburo in 1853.
This superb piece has the most unique and exciting designs and elegant, lush shape. Colors on this very wonderful vessel are exceptionally harmonious, glistening hues. Deep ebony, rich mahogany, captivating coppery brown and silvery highlights adorn this bowl. It has fabulous presence and grace. It was wood-fired or pit-fired. Stored away, carefully, for many decades, this is an extremely special and rare specimen in pristine condition.
Incredibly stunning metallic glazes are absolutely magnificent. The amazing colors change a bit - with the light and background.
Handpainted fluid forms are typical of Shoji Hamada's work. Artistic splashes, drips and streaks of rich tones are mesmerizingly marvelous.
This very elegant and special piece would look fabulous anywhere. It would look truly fantastic with JAPANESE, ARTS and CRAFTS, MISSION and MODERN decor. Sitting alone on any surface, it would look sensational! What a terrific and completely unique addition this would be to an art pottery, or any collection.
CONDITION:
This spectacular vessel is in excellent new condition with no chips or cracks. Many natural textural effects including natural glaze pops, natural asymmetry and natural tiny open slits are all original to the piece. Sale is final.
