1979 Chevrolet G10 Van
Once upon a time - or more accurately, back in the 1970s - the van reigned supreme. Riding-in right on the heels of the fading muscle car era, the custom van became the ultimate self-expression vehicle tricked-out and personalized to show all the world just how your bad self rolled. They were badass, man a portable pampered pad that allowed you to take all your extra-curricular activities of sorts, (legal or lotharios), on the road and there were custom shops on every corner back then that would customize your ride with a kick-ass sound system, lighting, shag carpeting, Captains chairs, beds, bubble windows, louvres, spoilers, mag wheels, custom horns, CB radios and don't forget to top it all off with a one-off airbrushed paint job depicting your choice of Wizard, Warlock, Wave or Western scenic. It may be time for a comeback, folks especially with the home foreclosure rate being what it is... (Thanks to JP from the Selvedge Yard).
For consignment, Peabody we are going back to the 1970's when muscle cars were dropping like flies and the custom van became king. Our consigner picked up this barn find several years ago, and had good intentions of creating his own showpiece, but time was fleeting, and did not allow for this to happen. In fact, a mere consigner stated 15 miles were put on since the dig out of the barn. So now it's up for grabs to another dreamer to create rock and roll on wheels.
Exterior
A standard Chevy G10 van, bathed in blue with some shiny accents is seen for your eyes to imagine an airbrushing of Wizard, Warlock, Wave, or Western Scenic adorning its large straight rust free panels. A smoked glass window has been added to the driver's side, and in the current configuration for the interior hovers next to the bed. Wake up and watch the sun, among other things rise. 15-inch polished mag styled faux knockoff hubbed wheels are wrapped by essential raised white letter Cooper Discoverer H/T Tires which are in good condition all around. In back check out the other must have with one of these "shaggin wagons" are the louvers on the rear door glass. Yeah Baby!
Interior
Inside with a swing of the rear doors, and we are greeted with 1979 wood paneling heisted from only the finest of used trailers of the era. A thin mattress covered with blue vinyl which can be quickly lifted to make a sheeted bed in case of emergency. 2 fashionable kitsch carriage style lamps provide just enough illumination so you can reach for your wallet and wrap that rascal prior to the consummation of an LSD trip, and lots of smoking of weed. Moving forward in this luxury liner we have access to large solid wood cabinetry that provides ample storage space for all your goodies and even a TV if you wish. Across the aisle is a beadboard wood wall that separates the bedroom from the bench seat that accommodates the ladies in waiting. Seen in the base of this bench are Pioneer 3-way speakers to grab the eardrums of only the finest audiophile aficionado and smooth the mood from the front mounted stereo. Upfront captain's chairs covered in blue velour broadcloth are sporting blue vinyl bolsters and the drivers chair has an armrest. Blue plastic forms the dash, drink storage area and sound system mounting. Standard instruments are in front of the original steering wheel, and some shag carpeting is loosely covering the floors. In the mid section is a hardwood laminate floor so you can break out a dance if the mood strikes you. Above, the ceiling has a skylight, and some extra lighting for map reading at night, and a felted headliner which has been surreptitiously mounted to the ceiling with wood strips. And do not forget the obligatory CB radio good buddy...
Drivetrain
Under the small hood, and mostly protruding not the cabin under the plastic covering below the dash is an unrestored 305ci V8. It is fed by a single 2-barrel carburetor and has a TH350 3-speed automatic on back along with a 10-bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
The time spent in the barn has been good to this van with just a slight peppering of surface rust on various parts of the underside. All structurally sound and the suspension shows as independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the rear. Power disc brakes are on the front, and power drums for the rear. A glasspack/cherry bomb style exhaust and muffler system is now on. Overall things are looking rust free and good underneath.
Drive-Ability
Since we only had enough time to check out the front seating accommodations we fired this baby up and it ran smooth as silk. Handling was top notch, and acceleration snappy. Bias free panic stopping worked swimmingly to bring this rolling no tell motel to a halt. We noted the radio and horn weren't working during our drive.
A nice barn find, no rust and basically an open canvas to redux, repaint, and recondition it to your special liking. Then go to a concert or festival and commence the fishing expedition. And remember, ass, grass or gas, no one rides for free!
